It's Never Too Old To Learn New Skills

It's been a week since I posted a new blog. Some days, just aren't meant for writing. I've been feeling stuck and experiencing writer's block. So for me to cope up, I needed to do something new out of my routine.

If you know me, you'll know that I am a frustrated artist. I know I have so many potentials in me but I wasn't given a chance to use those potentials. And even now that I am already a mom, I still have a long list of skills that I want to learn.

Our community quarantine got extended until May 15, 2020. And I guess it's a sign for me to learn a new skill. After all, it's never too late to learn new skills and there is always something we want to learn, right?

What skill do I want to learn, now?

I always wanted to be an illustrator, yes I can draw but I thought digital illustration is not for me. But guess what, I am wrong. If you are determined to learn a new skill. If you will set aside time to practice. There's nothing you can't learn.

As a mom, whenever Zoe tries to learn new skills. I always tell her that it's okay to make a mistake, but it's not okay to stop learning. The same applies to us, parents.

Last night, I finally opened my Adobe Illustrator. I watched some tutorials but I can't seem to do it. After so many hours and lots of mistakes. I found myself already losing my patience and wanted to stop instantly. But then, I remembered how I always tell Zoe these words when I see her get frustrated, "It's okay. Breathe in, Breathe out. Then try again."

From that moment, I stopped for a while. I realized that by making those mistakes, I figured out how the tools work. And slowly, I'm getting the hangs of it. From feeling frustrated, I am now enjoying what I am doing. Indeed, we're learning from our mistakes.

After so many hours of trial and error. I am proud to share my first ever illustration. I think it's not that bad for a first-timer. Haha Having a hard time doing the detailed parts so I made a flat illustration instead, for now. I'll squeeze some practice from time to time. So I can get better at illustration. What do you guys think? Let me know your comments!

See, it's never too late to learn something new. Especially for us moms, and to my fellow single moms. People around us may tell us that it's the end for us since we got pregnant early or we're single moms. But no, life doesn't stop just because we chose this path. Rather, it's a new chapter for us to dream, together with our child.

Here are some lists of skills you might want to learn, now!

  • try or create a new recipe
  • bake a cake
  • learn to sew or crochet
  • paint or draw
  • hand lettering
  • learn a new language
  • play an instrument
  • take photos
  • attend webinars that interests you
